Increase your professionalism!

IMG_3068

Setting professional standards in this competitive and unpredictable job market is a good way to increase your value as an employee. Here are a few ideas to increase professionalism in your new job: 1. Be On Time Punctuality is one key to increase professionalism in the workforce. A rule of thumb to follow is to look at being on time as being late. Instead, show up to work ten minutes early. This will show your boss that you are serious about your job. Also, it will give you plenty of time to prepare for the day and set a standard for other employees. 2. Learn To Share The Spotlight Being a team player also communicates a professional attitude to your… Read More →

Take The Credit – It’s YOUR Success!

OSCARS

Women resist calling attention to their accomplishments when they work in groups with men, a series of new studies suggests. For too many women, the hardest part of being successful might be taking credit for the work that they do, especially when they work in groups. In a study recently published in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, researchers Michelle C. Haynes and Madeline E. Heilman conducted a series of studies that revealed women were unlikely to take credit for their role in group work in a mixed-gender setting unless their roles were explicitly clear to outsiders. When women worked only with other women, they found, this problem of not taking credit disappears. “Women gave more credit to their male teammates and took… Read More →

Only one shot – How to make a good first impression

First impression

Most people will judge you within the first second of meeting you and their opinion will most likely never change.Making a good first impression is incredibly important, because you only get one shot at it. Princeton University psychologist Alex Todorov and co-author Janine Willis, a student researcher who graduated from Princeton in 2005 had people look at a microsecond of video of a political candidate. Amazingly, research subjects could predict with 70-percent accuracy who would win the election just from that microsecond of tape. This tells us that people can make incredibly accurate snap judgments in a tenth of a second. How can you ensure people are judging you accurately and also seeing your best side? You never want to give people an inauthentic… Read More →

The Body Never Lies…

bodylanguage

Up to 93 percent of our communication is nonverbal - This means that our body language, facial expressions and other nonverbal behavior is even more important than our verbal content. Yet most people don’t even think about what their body language is saying to others. As a result, many women don’t ever realize how much their body language is holding them back at work. I recently did body language coaching with a woman who was having a lot of trouble advancing in her career. She had all the right things going for her — great education, awesome performance reviews, successful sales, you name it — but still was not getting the promotions and upward mobility opportunities she deserved. Within the first five seconds… Read More →

Personal Branding is a Leadership requirement

02

Developing your personal brand is essential for the advancement of your career and development as a leader. Unfortunately, personal branding has become a “commoditized” term that has lost its intention as people have irresponsibly used social media as a platform to build their personal brand and increase their relevancy. They believe social media can immediately increase their market value for their personal brand rather than recognizing that the process of developing their personal brand is a much bigger responsibility; a never-ending journey that extends well beyond social media. This is why I always advise those who want to have a social media presence to think carefully about their intentions and objectives before opening an account. Why? Because the moment you… Read More →

Four ways to look your best at work

madmen women

There are maybe 50 ways to leave your lover, but only four ways to look your best at work…. It’s no secret that people often evaluate each other by their clothing – even from across the room, it’s usually not hard to tell the lawyer from the startup guy and the drummer from the investment banker. Some people ignore sartorial concerns, deriding the whole concept of “image” as shallow. And others obsess too much, fixating on which brands are the “right ones” to be wearing. (If you’re in the fashion industry, that may be a legitimate concern; for everyone else, you can probably relax.) But for professionals in every industry, it’s important to at least think through how your wardrobe… Read More →
